Looker Studio (formerly Google Data Studio) requires a Google account to access reports. If you have a Microsoft Outlook or Office 365 email address, you cannot log in directly using that email. The solution is to create a free Google account linked to your existing Microsoft email address, which lets you access Looker Studio without needing a Gmail account.
Why doesn't Looker Studio work with a Microsoft email?
Looker Studio is a Google product and uses Google's authentication system. Access to reports is managed by granting permission to specific Google accounts. When someone shares a report with your Microsoft email address, that email is registered as a Google account in the system, but unless you have actually created that Google account, you cannot authenticate and view the report. Creating a Google account that uses your Microsoft email as the login resolves this without requiring you to create a Gmail address.
How do you create a Google account with a Microsoft email?
- Go to accounts.google.com/signup in your browser.
- On the account creation form, click Use my current email address instead rather than creating a new Gmail address.
- Enter your Microsoft email address (e.g., yourname@outlook.com or yourname@company.com).
- Complete the remaining fields (name, date of birth) and click Next.
- Google will send a verification code to your Microsoft email. Enter the code to confirm ownership of the address.
- Once the account is created, sign into Google using your Microsoft email address and the password you just set.
How do you access the Looker Studio report?
Once your Google account is set up with your Microsoft email, open the Looker Studio report link in a browser where you are signed into that Google account. If you are prompted to request access, it means the report was shared with a different email address than the one you used to create your Google account. In that case, ask the report owner to share access with the exact email address you used to create your Google account.
What if you have multiple Google accounts?
If your browser is signed into multiple Google accounts, Looker Studio may open under the wrong one. Check the account displayed in the top-right corner of the screen. If it shows a different email address to the one the report was shared with, click on the account icon, select the correct account, and reload the report URL. Alternatively, open the report in a private or incognito window and sign in with the correct account.
