What is an AI Overview and How Does it Affect SEO?

What Google's AI Overviews are, how they differ from featured snippets, what they mean for website traffic and how to improve your chances of appearing.

Search Engine Optimization What is / explanation 3 min read

An AI Overview is a summary generated by Google's AI and displayed at the top of search results for certain queries, synthesising information from multiple sources to answer a question directly on the results page.

A featured snippet pulls a specific block of content from a single page. An AI Overview generates a synthesised answer using information from multiple sources, with citations linking to the pages it drew from. AI Overviews tend to appear for more complex or multi-part queries, while featured snippets are more common for straightforward factual questions. Unlike a featured snippet, the text in an AI Overview is generated rather than lifted directly from a source page.

What sources does Google use in AI Overviews?

Google draws from pages it considers authoritative and relevant to the query. Well-structured content that directly addresses a topic, strong E-E-A-T signals, and solid overall SEO fundamentals improve the likelihood of being cited. There is no technical setup required to appear in an AI Overview: it reflects content quality, authority, and relevance rather than any specific configuration.

Do AI Overviews reduce website traffic?

The evidence so far suggests AI Overviews can reduce click-through rates for informational queries, as users receive answers without visiting a source page. The impact is less pronounced for transactional and commercial searches, where users still need to visit a website to take action. At Phoenix Media, we track AI search visibility alongside traditional rankings for clients using SE Ranking, which monitors how often and in what context their content appears in AI-driven results.

How can I improve my chances of appearing in AI Overviews?

The principles are the same as those behind strong organic rankings: authoritative content, clear structure, accurate and up-to-date information, and demonstrated expertise. Content that directly and completely answers a question is more likely to be cited than content that approaches a topic indirectly. Keeping content current is important, as AI Overviews tend to favour accurate and recent sources over older material.

Should I change my SEO strategy because of AI Overviews?

The core principles of SEO remain the same. AI Overviews are an evolution in how Google surfaces information, not a replacement for search. Businesses most at risk are those whose strategy relies heavily on high-volume informational queries.

Diversifying into transactional content, building brand signals, and structuring content for both traditional and AI-driven search are sensible adjustments. A complete strategy overhaul is rarely warranted.
