A PBN, or Private Blog Network, is a network of websites built specifically to create backlinks to a target site in order to manipulate its search engine rankings. PBNs are a black hat SEO technique. Google explicitly prohibits link schemes of this kind, and sites found to be building or benefiting from a PBN risk a manual penalty that removes them from search results.
How does a PBN work?
The operator of a PBN typically buys expired domain names that already have backlinks and domain authority built up from their previous use. These domains are then set up as separate websites, usually with minimal content, and used solely to publish articles containing links pointing to the target site. Because the linking domains have existing authority, those links can artificially inflate the target site's perceived authority in Google's ranking algorithm. The network is kept private to avoid detection: domains are registered with different name servers and hosting providers to make them appear unconnected.
Why do people use PBNs?
PBNs appeal to some site owners because they offer complete control over the anchor text and placement of backlinks, without the time and effort required to earn links through genuine content or outreach. In competitive industries where organic rankings are difficult to achieve quickly, PBNs have historically been used to accelerate results. However, the risk profile has changed significantly as Google's ability to detect unnatural link patterns has improved.
What are the risks?
Google's algorithms and manual review teams actively look for unnatural link patterns associated with PBNs. A site that receives a manual action for link spam can be demoted or removed from search results entirely, with ranking recovery requiring significant remediation work. Even without a manual action, Google's link spam filters can neutralise the value of PBN links, meaning the investment in the network produces no ranking benefit. The risk of sudden and severe ranking loss makes PBNs a poor long-term strategy for any business that depends on search visibility.
What should you do instead?
Legitimate link building focuses on earning backlinks from genuinely relevant and authoritative sites through methods that Google considers acceptable. These include creating content that other sites want to reference, digital PR that results in coverage on news and industry sites, guest posting on credible publications, and blogger outreach. At Phoenix Media, we build links for clients through these white hat methods, which take longer to produce results but do not carry the penalty risk that PBNs introduce.
