The Top 10 Most Popular Google Ad Sizes

The top 10 most popular Google display ad sizes, the dimensions that win the most inventory, which to prioritise, and the file formats Google accepts.

Search & Shopping Ads Glossary & definitions 3 min read

Google Display Network ads run in a wide range of sizes, but a small set of formats accounts for the majority of available inventory and impressions. Designing creatives in the highest-performing sizes maximises the number of placements where your ads can appear. Google also accepts responsive display ads that automatically resize, but having custom static or HTML5 creatives in the key sizes gives you full control over how your ads look.

Which sizes should you prioritise?

If resources are limited, prioritise the 300x250, 728x90, 160x600, and 320x50. These four sizes together cover the vast majority of available display inventory on both desktop and mobile. Adding the 300x600 is worthwhile if you want to run larger, more prominent formats. If you are using responsive display ads, Google will handle sizing automatically, but you will still need to supply high-quality image assets in the correct aspect ratios (landscape, square, and portrait).

What file formats does Google accept?

Google Display Network accepts static image ads in JPG, PNG, and GIF formats, and animated HTML5 ads built to Google's specifications. The maximum file size for image ads is 150KB. Animated GIFs must not loop more than three times.

For responsive display ads, Google accepts still images and logos without needing to supply separate ad sizes. These requirements apply globally, including when running Google Display campaigns in Thailand, where the Display Network reaches the majority of Thai internet users through local news, entertainment, and lifestyle publisher sites.

If you are planning display campaigns, our programmatic advertising and Google Ads teams handle sizing and creative requirements as part of the setup.
