Shopify is a hosted e-commerce platform that allows businesses to build and run an online store without needing to manage web hosting or server infrastructure themselves. It is one of the most widely used platforms for selling products online and provides everything needed to set up, operate, and scale an online shop, including product listings, payment processing, shipping management, and marketing tools.

How does Shopify work?

Shopify is a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform, meaning you pay a monthly subscription rather than owning the software or managing your own server. You choose a theme for your store's design, add your products and pricing, set up payment methods, and configure shipping. Shopify handles hosting, security, and platform updates automatically. Customers visit your store, add items to their cart, and check out through Shopify's built-in payment processing or a third-party payment gateway.

What are Shopify's main features?

Key features include:

  • Product management: add unlimited products with variants (size, colour), images, descriptions, and inventory tracking
  • Payment processing: Shopify Payments is built in; third-party gateways including PayPal, Stripe, and local Thai payment options are also supported
  • App store: thousands of apps extend functionality, covering everything from email marketing and loyalty programmes to fulfilment and customer reviews
  • Analytics: built-in reporting covers sales, traffic sources, and customer behaviour
  • Multi-channel selling: integrate with Facebook, Instagram, Google Shopping, and marketplaces from within the Shopify admin

Is Shopify good for SEO?

Shopify has solid built-in SEO foundations: it generates sitemaps automatically, supports custom page titles and meta descriptions, produces clean URLs, and loads quickly due to its hosted infrastructure. The main SEO limitation is less control over URL structure compared to WordPress, and the blog functionality is more limited. For a business whose primary goal is selling products online, Shopify's SEO capabilities are sufficient. For businesses that rely heavily on content marketing to drive organic traffic, WordPress may offer more flexibility.

Is Shopify available in Thailand?

Yes. Shopify operates globally and is used by Thai businesses. Thai Baht (THB) is supported as a store currency, and local Thai payment gateways can be integrated. Shopify Payments itself is not available directly in Thailand, so Thai merchants typically use a third-party gateway such as Omise, 2C2P, or PayPal for payment processing.
