Should You Choose a Local Domain or a .com?

Should you choose a local .co.th domain or a .com, what a ccTLD is, how Google treats them for SEO, when to choose each, and whether to run both.

Web Design & Development Troubleshooting & FAQ 4 min read

For most businesses operating in Thailand, the choice comes down to whether you primarily serve a local Thai audience, an international audience, or both. There is no universally correct answer, but the decision has implications for SEO, brand perception, and how Google interprets your site's geographic relevance.

What is a country-code top-level domain (ccTLD)?

A country-code top-level domain is a domain extension assigned to a specific country. In Thailand, the local extension is .co.th. Other common ccTLDs include .co.uk (United Kingdom), .com.au (Australia), and .co.jp (Japan).

Using a ccTLD signals to both users and search engines that your website is intended for an audience in that country. .co.th domains require registration through a Thai registrar and, for most categories, a Thai business registration number.

Does Google treat .co.th and .com differently for SEO?

Yes. Google uses domain extension as one of several signals to determine geographic relevance. A .co.th domain sends a clear signal that the site is intended for Thai users and is more likely to rank for searches conducted in Thailand by default. A .com domain has no inherent geographic association, but you can set a geographic target in Google Search Console, and Google will also use other signals such as server location, content language, and the physical addresses mentioned on the site to infer geographic relevance.

When should you choose .co.th?

A .co.th domain is the stronger choice if your primary audience is in Thailand, you operate in Thai and want to rank for Thai-language queries, your business is locally registered and you want the credibility signal that comes with the local extension for Thai users, and you have no plans to expand beyond the Thai market. Many Thai users also have a degree of familiarity with and trust in .co.th domains for local services.

When should you choose .com?

A .com domain is the better fit if you serve or plan to serve customers outside Thailand, your brand is international or operates across multiple countries, your content is primarily in English, or you want a single domain that can target multiple markets over time. .com remains the most recognised domain extension globally and carries no negative implications for Thai SEO when Search Console geo-targeting is correctly configured.

Can you run both?

Yes. Some businesses operate a .com as their primary international domain and a .co.th that redirects to it, or vice versa. However, managing two fully separate sites with duplicated content creates unnecessary complexity and potential SEO issues.

In most cases, choosing one domain and using hreflang tags and Search Console geo-targeting to manage regional signals is cleaner than maintaining two separate domain structures. If you are building a new website and are unsure which direction your business will grow, .com is generally the more flexible starting point.
