What is NAP Consistency and Why Does it Matter for Local SEO?

What NAP consistency means, why mismatched business details hurt local rankings, where NAP data appears and how to fix inconsistencies.

Search Engine Optimization What is / explanation 3 min read

NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone number. NAP consistency means these three details appear in exactly the same format across every online listing, directory, and mention of your business.

Why does inconsistent NAP information cause problems?

Search engines use NAP data from multiple sources to verify a business's identity and location. When the same business appears with different address formats, phone number variations, or name spellings across different platforms, it creates conflicting signals. Google may become uncertain about which version is correct, which can reduce the confidence it has in your business data and negatively affect local search rankings. It can also confuse potential customers who encounter different information on different platforms.

Where does NAP data appear online?

NAP data appears in a wide range of places beyond your own website. Common sources include:

Google Business Profile: the most important source for local rankings.

Apple Maps and Bing Places: secondary map platforms with their own listing data.

Industry directories and review sites: TripAdvisor, Yelp, Foursquare, and sector-specific directories.

Thai business directories: platforms such as ThailandYellowPages and local chamber of commerce listings are relevant for businesses in Thailand.

Social media profiles: Facebook Business pages and LinkedIn company pages.

Press mentions and partner websites: any page that references your business details.

What counts as an inconsistency?

Even small variations can create conflicting signals. Common inconsistencies include using "Co., Ltd." in one place and "Co Ltd" in another, listing a full floor and building address in one directory and a shorter version elsewhere, or having different phone number formats such as +66 2 XXX XXXX versus 02-XXX-XXXX. The standard to aim for is character-level consistency: the same name, the same address format, and the same phone number in every location.

How do I fix NAP inconsistencies?

The first step is an audit: compile every place your business appears online and compare the details against a master record. Work through the most authoritative sources first, starting with Google Business Profile, then Apple Maps, Bing Places, and any directories with high domain authority. For businesses in Thailand, this typically includes updating both English and Thai-language versions of listings, as both can influence how Google understands the business. NAP audits are a standard part of the local SEO work we do when onboarding new clients.
